(More customer reviews)I bought this particular pattern in cobalt blue (which isn't quite cobalt, but it is blue). It works so well, and it looks so pretty when it is finished. This past week, I decided that I should redo the kids' bathroom. I had three rolls of this particular paper that I picked up last year for a fraction of its original cost. After scraping off all the old paper (which was glued directly onto the plaster!!!!), I was left with gauges and scrapes in the wall.
You can stick this paper, though, onto damaged walls, too. So, I didn't prime the walls (and the next owners will be just as upset as I was, I'm sure), I just stuck it right on!
This is not regular wallpaper. It's called PaperIllusions because it gives the appearance of marble or of hand-painted faux-finishes (depending on the pattern you choose). You actually tear the paper into smaller pieces (they recommend about 8 by 14 inches), wet the paper, and stick it onto the wall. Then, you overlap the next piece, then do it again until you're done. Yes, you have to smooth it out with a smoother, but it's kind of fun and it's very easy. There's no trimming involved AT ALL (as a matter of fact, I never took out my utility knife), because you use the straight edges to do the edge of the walls or the windows or where ever you need a straight edge.
The paper is actually a complimentary color under the paper (in the case of the cobalt, the under paper is gray), so those torn edges look like streaks of gray-- similar to marble.
The room turned out beautifully!
If you look up PaperIllusions on various websites, you can really get a better idea of what this paper will look like, since the picture here isn't so helpful and isn't shown used as it supposed to be used. Some people actually have put this down on their floors or their kitchen counters and have covered it with polyurethane! It really does give the illusion of stone or marble (depending on the color and pattern).
There is no real downside with using this paper, at all. It's easier than regular wallpaper since there is no trimming and no concern about crooked ceilings or walls that aren't at a perfect angle. There is no pattern matching necessary. It's "breathable" paper-- if you find some air bubbles you didn't get out, they will shrink by the next morning and lay flat against the wall. And, as an added benefit, since I had to go up and down the ladder a zillion times (since each piece of paper is only about 8X11 inches or so), I woke up the next day with very sore calves-- that had to be the best leg workout I've had in ages!
This retails for UNDER $30 a roll and each roll is enough to cover 85 square feet. If you see the paper selling for under $10, make sure you realize you're probably getting a MINI roll-- that only covers about 13 square feet. I found some great deals for this paper on eBay, for instance, and just won an auction of several rolls which was leftover from someone else's project (we sniped that one!). I'm planning to do the living room next!
